Well here we are at the end of another week of school. The kids continue to do a nice job in class. They are engaged and eager to participate. We continued with classification and are now starting to talk about the different kingdoms all living things are members. Most students know about plants and animals but are unaware of the other kingdoms. We will talk about each but spend most of our time on plants and animals. Outdoor school is Nov. 2-7. Please get forms in ASAP to your child's block teacher if going with Jenny/Walenza.
I waant to thank parents for their generous contributions to the class. We now have an electric pencil sharpener and several new green plants including 2 carnivorous plants in the form of a Venus Flytrap and a Pitcher Plant. Both of these provide for ties to the curriculum. Kids think these plants "eat". Leads to good discussions.
We have a quiz on Tuesday covering classification and creation of a division key among other ideas.
Have a great weekend.

Well we are into our third full week of school. We had our first quiz this past Friday and overall the students did well. They will be be bringing the quizzes home on Tuesday. Please ask to see them and go over them. We continue to work on classification and there is an assignment due Wednesday.
I was quite pleased with the parent turnout this past Thursday. Thank you for all your support. It was nice to reconnect with some faces from the past.
Please use the agendas to check on student work that is due in near future.
A reminder if your child has Walenza or Jenny for block they leave for outdoor school on the 2nd of November.
Again the kids are great. Keep up the good work at home.

Things are going well in class as we move into classification. The students are full of questions and eager to participate in a dialogue. All good.
In addition, they all seem so well behaved.
Tomorrow night is Back to School night for parents. Hope to see most of you there.
I will be having a brief informational meeting about the trip to Florida next June if you have questions about it.
Quiz on Friday on characteristics of living things. Students have a worksheet, a handout and vocabulary to study from.

Well here we are at the end of the first full week of school. All has been going wellas we continue to talk about living things. The students had their first set of vocabulary words and we are using both definitions and in many cases drawings to represent the word so there is an association made by the student. Have them show it to you. We will likely have our 1st quiz next Thursday or Friday. They will be told for certain on Monday.

The students were introduced to the Florida Trip yesterday and if there was interest they took home a packet that explains how to register online. I will try to post a link to the site on my home page and this blog. The focus of the trip is marine biology and ecology of the Everglades and Florida Keys. I will be able to answer questions on Thursday after the open house in my room, # 1.

Have a great weekend!!!!

Wednesday, Sept. 10th

The kids did a great job responding to the question about the flame. Their answers were well thought out and articulated. It was interesting to have them relate how some of you (parents) responded to the same question. Some students were clever and asked older siblings who had been through my class before.
We will continue to talk about characteristics of living things and soon to get into how living things are classified.
Additionally, I have been very impressed with all of the students. They seem very well behaved and the beginning of the school year has been great. Looking forward to back to school night on the 18th.

Is the flame alive?

We are curerntly studying what the characteristics of living things are. The students saw a demonstration involving a flame. There are 6 characteristics of living things and the current assignment is to come to class prepared to argue whether they believe the flame is alive or not. Hopefully we will have a lively debate/discussion.
